18-wheeler crash kills police officer, injures another

A tragic accident involving an 18-wheeler on Interstate 10 near Kerrville, Texas, on April 26, left one off-duty police officer dead and another injured.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Larry Candelari and Mike Huffman – two 49-year-old members of the Pasadena Police Department – were on their way home from a hunting trip at around 9:40 p.m. when they stopped to assist motorists who were involved in a prior accident that had left a U-Haul trailer in the middle of the highway.

Texas Department of Public Safety investigators told the source that an 18-wheeler swerved to avoid hitting the trailer and crashed full-speed into some cars parked along the road. Candalari died at the scene of the accident and Huffman was airlifted to University Hospital in San Antonio, where he had to get a part of his leg amputated. There were three other individuals injured as well.

“They were amazing, outstanding,” said police department spokesperson Tamara Spencer of the off-duty policemen. “Pasadena has such an outstanding department anyway and [Candelari] was just one of their best SWAT guys. And Mike [Huffman] is the toughest cop I’ve ever met.”
